ELECTIVE CIRCUMCISION

Dr Walkom uses the plastibell method.

Dr Walkom normally recommends circumcisions be carried out by 6 weeks of age unless born prematurely or small. This can be discussed with the secretary if there are concerns about the timing and Dr Walkom will be informed.

Dr Walkom performs circumcisions in the surgery on a fortnightly basis.

If the full Medicare rebate is to be claimed for the procedure you will need to bring a referral from your general practitioner for the circumcision.

The secretary will notify you of the time to arrive. Dr Walkom will discuss the procedure and you will be given information pamphlets to read before the procedure is performed. Further information can be found in the links below.

Because our registered nurse/midwife applies local anaesthetic cream we require you to present well before the procedure.

Can the baby be fed before the procedure?

Yes. Preferably, however, the baby should be fed afterwards as feeding post circumcision aids in comforting the baby.

Is there anything I should bring?

Parents need to bring with them Infant Panadol and administer 0.5 ml ½ an hour before the procedure and the nurse will let you know when to give this.

We also ask that parents bring a comforter (dummy) and some spare nappies and baby wipes.

What happens when I arrive?

After the anaesthetic cream is applied Dr Walkom will discuss the procedure and give you written information. He is pleased to answer any questions you may have regarding the procedure.

What happens after the procedure?

Parents will be required to stay at least ½ an hour after the procedure in order to have baby’s penis checked post operatively.

Where can I obtain information about the procedure?

You may email Dr Walkom’s secretary and printed sheets will be forwarded to you upon request.

Note:

**We ask that prams/strollers are not brought into the office due limited seating.

**Some babies take longer to settle than others so if the parents have children to pick up from school or a baby sitter it is probably a good idea to have someone on standby as the time frame for procedures can be unpredictable.

Patients should plan to be at the office for 3hrs on the day of the procedure. We appreciate your time and understanding and apologise for any inconvenience.
